Greek Travel Pages (https://www.gtp.gr/AccomodationDetails.asp?ID=81810)

Disabled Access at the Acropolisを見ておけばよかった。

https://www.ytk.jp/cruise/ship/oceania_riviera/

Currents 2018/10/26

Currents 2018/10/26

 毎日、船内新聞「CURRENTS(海流)」が届く。

gangway

gangway

The Propylaia, the monumental entrance of the sanctuary of the Acropolis, was built at the west edge of the hill in the frame of the building programme of Perikles. The building’s architect was Mnesikles, who applied ingenious and innovative architectural solutions. The construction of the Propylaia (437-432 B.C.) was interrupted by the outbreak of the Peloponnesian War, and as a result the original plan remained incomplete.
The Propylaia comprise a central building with an E.-W. direction and similar hexastyle (6 columns) Doric pedimental facadet. A cross-wall with five doorways divides the central building into two parts. The longer western one is divided into three aisles by two Ionic colonnades, each of three columns, which support the ceiling. The marble ceilings comprised beams and coffered slabs which had rich painted decoration. The central building of the Propylaia is flanked on the south and the north by two wings with a similar prostyle Doric porch. In the north wing the hall lying behind the porch might have served as a banquet and recreation hall for the worshippers. According to the traveler Pausanias (2nd cent. A. D.) the hall was decorated with paintings and for this reason is conventinally known as the “Pinakotheke” (picture gallery). The southwing consists only of a porch through which the sanctuary of Athena Nike was accessed.
In the 6th cent. A.D., the south wing of the Propylaia was transformed into a single-aisle Christian basilica. In the Medieval times, Frankish and FIorentine rulers converted the Propylaia into a Palace and a tall tower was built at the south wing. During Ottoman Occupation, in 1640. The building was struck by a lightning or a cannonball which blew up the gunpowder stored there and caused extensive damage to the monument. The Medieval and later remains were removed during the excavations of the Acropolis in the 19th cent.in order to reveal the Propylaia of the Classical period.

 The restoration of the parthenon;
Works in progress and interventions completed.

The project of the Opisthonaos (1992-1993 and 2001-2004) included the strengthening of columns by grouting (1997) and the structural restoration of the capitals, the upper drums and the entablature. The blocks of the west part of the frieze were transferred to the museum and cleaned with the use of a laser method; they were replaced with copies made of artificial stone (1-2).
The works in the west side (2011-2015) concerned the structural restoration of the two corners of the entablature including the capitals and parts of the edges of the pediment. Seven metopes from the west of the monument were transferred to the museum, while copies were placed back to their original positions (2,5,6).
During June of the 2017 the restoration programme of the west pediment began. The works were of a rescue nature and included the dismantling of the middle orthostate and the upper blocks of the backing wall. During their repositioning special damps will be used to further secure the orthostates (3-4).
ln the period of (2017-2020) the works will involve the replacing of the grid frame of the roof of the west wing, with the use of ancient restored beams together with new ones that were made in the 1950s.
Later on, the arrangement of all or some of the newer coffer slabs will also take place (7).

Currents。

Few countries in the world offer as much geographical and natural diversity on such a small land surface as Croatia.

Stretching from the northern harbor of Rijeka to Dubrovnik in the south, Croatia’s coast is a stunning seascape of friendly locals and rare beauty.

The true highlight of Croatia is the legendary Dalmatian Coast, where pristine beaches and deep blue waters merge into the cool Mediterranean.

With approximately 1200 Islands only 66 of which are said to be inhabited, the Dalmatian Coast boasts not only the largest archipelago but also the cleanest and clearest waters in the Mediterranean region. The majority of the coastline along the eastern Adriatic Sea belongs to Croatia, with the city of Dubrovnik situated in the southernmost section of the Republic. Dubrovnik, among the unique cities of the world, is a place of ancient streets lined with stone palaces,Venetian style buildings and bell towers. It was recognized in 1979 as one of UNESCO’s “World Heritage Treasures” due to the numerous restoration projects executed over the past several centuries. Its people take pride in their uncompromising commitment to the restoration of their city at all costs. Entering Dubrovnik, you are greeted by an impressive pedestrian promenade, the Placa, which extends before you all the way to the Clock Tower and Small Onofrio Fountain at the other end of town. Just inside the city walls near the Pile Gate is the Large Onofrio Fountain a popular meeting spot for Dubrovnik’s young population. The entire perfectly preserved old town is unique for its marbled-paved squares as well as its cobbled streets, tall houses, churches, palaces, fountains and museums, all cut from the same light colored stone.

Streets and lanes are blessedly free of vehicular traffic and the human spirit prevails in a vibrant and inviting manner. Most tours to the old city begin at the ancient entrance at the Pile Gate, where you will pass through the city walls. Built between the 13th and 17th centuries, these great walls measure 6200 feet in length are 3 to 19 feet thick and encompass the entire old town. Several bastions and two great fortresses guard each approach.

Dating from the 14th century, the Franciscan Monastery has a remarkable Gothic porch with a small ornamented cloister. The monastery preserves the equipment and utensils of the third-oldest functioning pharmacy in the world. The library contains more than 30,000 volumes including 1500 manuscript, 15 illuminated choral books from the 15th and 16th centuries, and numerous works of old Croatian music.

The Adriatic Coast excels in fresh seafood dishes ranging from scampi, shellfish and Dalmatian brodet (mixed fish stewed with rice), all cooked in olive oil and served with boiled vegetables. Italian pizza and pasta are also good options on the Dalmatian Coast, costing about half of what you would pay in Western Europe. It’s customary to have a small glass of brandy before a meal and to accompany the food with one of Croatia’s fine regional wines. Croatia is also known for its plum brandies, herbal brandies, cognacs and liqueurs such as maraschino, a cherry liqueur made in Zadar. Italian-style espresso coffee is also a local favorite.

SHUTTLE BUS SERVICE IN DUBROVNIK

The architectural refinements of the Parthenon
The architectural members of the Parthenon were carved in such a way that the parts of the temple present deviation from the strict straight line; the horizontal parts (steps, stylobate, elevation) are slightly convex, the vertical parts (columns, walls of the cella) slightly incline inwards, the columns diameter tapers from the lower to their upper part and have a swelling in the middle of their height, etc., resulting in an overall impression of an upward movement of the building.

The Parthenon was a temple dedicated to Athena Parthenos (Virgin). It is built in the Doric order and made of white Pentelic marble with a width of 30.86 m., a length of 69.51 m. and a height of 15 m. It has an outer colonnad (pteron) of 8 columns on the short and 17 columns on the long sides as well as an inner colonnade (prostasis) of 6 columns on the short sides. The interior of the temple was divided into the pronaos, the sekos (cella), the opisthodomos and the opisthonaos (see Plan. no 1,2,3 and 4 respectively).

The Parthenon was the most important building of the Programme for the re-establishment of the Acropolis sanctuary after the sack by the Persians (480 B.C.), which was implemented at the initiative of Perikles, the renowned politician of Athens. The funding for the programme came from the treasury of the Athenian League that was kept in the opisthodomos of the Parthenon.

The temple was built between 447 and 438 B.C. and its sculptural decoration was completed in 432 B.C. Iktinos and Kallikrates were the architects of the temple. lts architectural sculptures were designed and partly sculpted, in collaboration with his colleagues, by the famous Athenian sculptor and friend of Perikles, Pheidias, who also had the general supervision of the construction of the temple. Pheidias also created the chryselephantine (gold and ivory) statue of the goddess with an imposing formal appearance and of a total height of 12 m, which stood in the cella. The statue is not preserved but its appearance is known from ancient writers and later copies.

The sculptural adornment of the temple.
The rich sculptural decoration of the Parthenon which through the centuries suffered severe damages and looting, consisted of 92 metopes, the compositions on the pediments and the frieze (see sectional diagram of the Parthenon). Great part of the original sculptural decoration is exhibited in the Acropolis Museum. The metopes depict the battle between the Olympian gods against the rebellious Giants (Gigantomachy) on the east side, the sack of Troy by the Greeks (Ilou persis) on the north side the repulsion of the Amazons who threatened the city (Amazonomachy) on the west side, and scenes of battle between Greeks and Centaures (Centauromachy) on the south side.

The east Pediment represents the birth of Athena from the head of her father Zeus, in the presence of other Olympian gods. The duration of the birthday of the goddess is defined by the chariot of Helios (the sun) and the chariot of Selene (the moon) at the corners of the pediment. The west pediment shows the dispute between Athena and Poseidon for the protection of Attica, in the presence of the kings who were the forefathers of the Athenians and local heroes or personifications of the Attic landscape.

The frieze, an intercalary lonic element in a Doric building of a total length of 160 m. depicts the procession of the festival of the Great Panathenaea, in which several groups of the citizens and the army of Athens participated. The Procession concludes on the east side, with the offering of the robe (peplos), for the cult statue of Athena Polias in the presence of the Olympian gods.

Behold the natural attractions of Cephalonia, including those beneath the surface, such as the Drogarati Cave and subterranean Melissani Lake.

Departing from the pier, you’ll drive toward the eastern shore of Cephalonia, the largest Ionian island. Arriving at the Drogarati Cave, you’ll descend a flight of stairs into a large cavern which is lighted for dramatic effect. Stalactites hang from the ceiling like jagged curtains, and ancient stalagmites reach up from the rocky floor. The colors are predominately red, orange, yellow and white, from the iron content in the rock and the layers of chalk and limestone.

Although estimated to be 100 million years old, the cave wasn’t discovered until about 300 years ago when a violent earthquake opened an entrance. Inside the cave’s Chamber of Exaltation, the acoustics are considered near perfect, and concert events are oftenheld in its voluminous interior. Even the famed opera soprano, Maria Callas, sang here.

Continuing on, you will travel in a northerly direction, passing the town of Sami en route to the renowned Melissani Lake. This underground phenomenon looks absolutely magical in the shafts of light that come from 100 feet above, where parts of the ceiling collapsed decades ago. You’ll enter the lake by small boat, paddled in so it hardly disturbs the surface of the water, which is a brackish mix of saltwater from the Ionian Sea and freshwater that originated back in Argostoli and then flowed across the island. The stalactites hanging from the ceiling here are estimated to be at least 20,000 years old.

Afterwards, you’ll return to Argostoli via a picturesque coastal route that offers spectacular views across the strait to the island of Ithaca, and further along, Myrtos and its dramatic sheer white cliffs.

Please note. This tour includes approximately l hour of moderate walking; however, surfaces inside the caves are natural, uneven and can be slippery. There is also a flight of steps to negotiate at Drogarati Cave. Participants must be able to enter and exit the small boats at Melissani Lake with limited assistance. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and not considered suitable for those with mobility concerns. Comfortable clothing, hat and flat walking shoes are recommended. No heels please. Temperatures in the caves can be cool so a light sweater or jacket is also suggested.

One of the oldest and most famous Montenegrin towns is Kotor. The coastal town is located in a most secluded part of the Gulf of Kotor, at the foot of mountain Lovcen. Kotor is a typical Mediterranean travel destination with old narrow streets, romantic bars and restaurants, small shops, antique monuments, churches and picturesque buildings. Famous poets and writers have used the beauty of the Bay of Kotor as inspiration for their works. Listed as unesco World Natural and Historical Heritage Site, Kotor has become a famous yachting and sailing destination for skippers around the globe.

Journey through the mountain towns of Montenegro, a winsome country full of history and tradition, on the coast of the Adriatic. The main port city of Kotor bustles at the foot of Mount Orjen, where deep waters submerge an ancient river canyon. Surrounded by impressively high medieval walls, the town is a welcoming juncture of ethnic Montenegrins, Serbians, Croatians, Romani and others. Old Town Kotor is a unesco World Heritage Site, restored after a 1979 earthquake damaged parts of its Romanesque churches, iconographic monuments and medieval buildings. Today, the port is the gateway to a chain of humble yet beautiful and enriching mountain hamlets where old customs are still part of daily life.

Kotor is an interesting place for mountain lovers. Towards the peak Sveti Iven (St. Ivan), above Kotor, there is a path dedicated for those who share a passion for hiking. For those who prefer to remain at sea level, explore the possibility of renting sailing equipment and discover your inner sailor. Next to the channel of Bay of Boka Kotorska, the water is calm presenting a great opportunity for diving. Inquire at the diving club “Zubatac” (Dentex) for the possibility of renting diving gear.

Stretching some 2.8 miles (45 kilometers) directly above and east of the Old Town, on almost vertical cliffs, is the meandering upper town walls. It looks a little like a short version of the Great Wall. Climbing up the l,350 steps will be rewarded by an excellent view of Kotor and the bay from the Church of Our Lady of Health (half way up) and the St. John’s fortress on top. Only advisable for physically fit people, furthermore on some sections the steps are broken up. Choose your footwear wisely (sturdy shoes preferable over sneakers and definitely no flip flops). The 1,200 foot (366-meter) ascent may take an hour. There are two access points to the Upper Town Walls, one near the northern gate by St. Mary’s Church, and one closer to the southern gate to the Old Town.

Kotor’s unique culinary staples are pure comfort food. Try any of a variety of stewed dishes. Boiled lamb with vegetables, lamb cooked in milk, and pork stew with rastan, a dark leafy green, infuse the native diet with savory warmth. Ask for the catch of the day in any restaurant, too–grilled fish is delicious here. For quicker fare hit a local grill. Regular favorites include Pljeskavia, a lamb pork and beef burger, or cevapi, minced pork and beef in bun with grilled onions and sour cream. Pair food with wine here, Vranac, a dry red with high berry flavors, is the region’s specialty. Krstac, a dry floral white, is another local worth sipping. More potent is rakija, a local brandy made with plum, apricot or grape and flavored with herbs and honey.

Shop Old Kotor for endless possibilities. Boutiques, galleries, cafes and shops start within walking distance of the pier. Once inside the walls of the town, even more options unfold. Look for high end Italian labels lining the streets next to great souvenir boutiques and shops with jewelry, books, photography and prints and local antiques. Bring back some of the local wine, too.

Currents。

Situated in a lagoon on Italy’s northeastern Adriatic Coast, Venice is one of the most beautiful romantic and best-loved cities in the world. This truly unique city–a maze of waterways, walkways, narrow streets and small squares– is built on approximately 117 islets, which are separated by 177 canals and spanned by some 400 bridges. The buildings are supported by literally millions of poles driven into the marshy sediment. A 3-miles (4.8-kilometer) bridge reaches across the lagoon connecting Venice to the mainland, while a narrow sandbar, the famous Lido, forms a natural breakwater that protects Venice from the force of the Adriatic Sea. There are, of course, no cars or buses in the main city and transport for visitor or Venetian alike is on foot, by vaporetto (water bus) private launch, water taxi or the traditional, graceful gondola.
Venice was the home of Marco Polo and later in history Casanova, who was imprisoned here. Many famous people have visited Venice including kings, queens, emperors and popes. Lord Byron, Charles Dickens, Puskin, Mark Twain, Henry James and Emest Hemingway, among others, all stayed in Venice. Vivaldi worked here as a concert master and Richard Wagner stayed in Venice while composing “Tristan and Isolde.” Numerous artists and writers have immortalized its charmed beauty. Today tourism is a very important industry for the city, followed by maritime and port services. Piazza San Marco (St. Mark’s Square) is the center of life in Venice, a popular meeting place where visitors can stroll, listen to the musicians outside the coffee houses, browse in the shops in the Piazza’s arcades, or feed the large numbers of pigeons that congregate there.
Near the center of St. Mark’s Square is a copy of the original 9th-century bell tower, which collapsed in 1902. An elevator will take you to the top for magnificent views. The clock tower, across from the bell tower, was built in 1499 by Mauro Coducci. Giant Moors strike the hour on the great bell. There is also a zodiac clock on the tower, showing the time in Arabic and Roman numerals. St. Mark’s Basilica is truly a masterpiece of Byzantine architecture. Built in 830,it was originally a chapel for the Doges. The present Basilica dates from the 11th century and contains some magnificent mosaics, precious art and rare marbles. Palazzo Ducale (Doge’s Palace), situated next to the Basilica, was both the residence of the Doge and the seat of government. The finest room in the palace is the grand Council Chamber, containing paintings by Tintoretto and Veronese. The Bridge of Sighs (Ponte del Sospiri) is a baroque stone bridge built in the 17th, century connecting the Doge’s Palace with the old prisons. It was named after the despair of prisoners who were led across to be executed or incarcerated. The Grand Canal is the main waterway of Venice, approximately two miles in length, it is lined with some 100 marble palaces, built between the 12th and 18th centuries.
Rice is more popular in Venice than pasta, and risotto is quite common. Fegato alla Veneziana is a local specialty; thin strips of calves’ liver grilled with onions and served with polenta with the main accompaniment being either maize or cornmeal cakes. Fish is plentiful; try Pasticcio di Pesce, a fish pie. There are several good wines produced in the region surrounding Venice; perhaps the best-known reds are Valpolicella, Bardolino, Cabernet and Merlot.

The Ionian Island of Kefalonia, also known as Cephalonia, is strikingly beautiful, with jagged limestone cliffs and terraced slopes dotted with olive groves. The highest point on the island is Mount Ainos, rising to 5,914 feet (1774 meters). Large areas are covered by luxuriant subtropical vegetation, and all around the island, the scenery offers magnificent views of the mountains and the sea.
Many sites on Kefalonia reflect its tumultuous history of ever-changing kings and rulers. The Norman Kings of Sicily ruled the island during medieval times, followed by Italian overlords who ruled for three centuries under the principality of the Morea. In 1478, the Turks conquered the island only to be defeated 20 years later by the Vegetians. And, for a short time the British ruled here as well. Finally in 1864, Kefalonia was returned to Greece. In 1823 Lord Byron spent several months on the island, captivated by the enduring spirit of the people, the natural beauty of the land and its rich history.
Visitors to Kefalonia look to spend time in such places as the serene fishing village of Assos and the scenic town of Argostoli. Other highlights on the island include a Venetian Fortress, a 13th century castle and spectacular caves.
The biggest town of the island and the lively capital of the island is Argostoli, a town built amphitheatrically, with intense city life and active, full of various types of entertainments: shops for every taste, coffee to relax, bars and beaches nearby. Although Argostoli was totally ruined by an earthquake in 1953 there are still sites that depict the old Venetian architecture. You can see the old town Krani with the Cyclopean Walls, you can walk on the pedestrian street, where if you have the opportunity you may encounter the local philharmonic orchestra playing traditional Ionian songs; you can complete your promenade strolling through the dock.
Argostoli’s attractions are mostly within walking distance of the port. Though some are reconstructions of older buildings, for the most part, the capital has been reconstructed over the last 60 years. The meeting point in the city is Vallianos Square surrounded by shops, tavernas and other businesses. A couple blocks south of the square is the main shopping street, Lithostroto. which is a pedestrian-only cobblestone shopping mall. There are two nice small museums in the city. The Archaeological Museum has artifacts from Mycenean to Roman times. The Korgialeneio History and Folk Art Museum includes many displays showing the island prior to the earthquake. The picturesque De Bosset Bridge was built of wood in the early 19th century, but replaced a few years later with stone. It is one of the city’s most popular photo spots along with the Doric-style lighthouse rebuilt after the earthquake.
Don’t leave Argostoli without trying a few of their local specialties. Try a hearty Kefalonian meat pie for lunch, and wash it down with a glass of Robola, the local wine produced on the island. Drop by the bakery on Argostoli’s main thoroughfare for a round cheese pie, and pick up some bread to drizzle local thyme honey on.

SOUTH PROPYLAEUM
The ‘South Propylaeum’ as we see it today is a result of the restoration of Evans who put up a copy of the ‘Cup-Bearer’ fresco here (Fig.1).
The wall painting depicted a man holding a libation vase (rhyton). lts theme is connected with the “Procession Fresco” which, according to Evans, reached here the ‘South Propylaeum’.
The pithoi (large storage jars) on the east side of the Propylaeum belong to the Postpalatial Period (1450-1100 B.C.), and indicate that the area was later used for storage.
East wing, “Grand Staircase”
A large part of the East Wing cannot be seen from the Central Court as it is built into the side of the hill on top of which lies the rest of the Palace. It is one of the most interesting parts of the palace because two storeys are preserved below the levelof the Central Court. Today, a large part of it has been reconstructed in concrete.
The storeys are connected with one another by means of a system of stairs known as the “Grand Staircase”. The staircase was found during the excavation in its original position (Fig.1,2). There is a total of four flights of stairs, two for each storey.
The two lower flights are preserved as they were found. The steps are broad and deep, with a gentle incline that makes for an easy ascent. The staircase is lit by a large lightwell and surrounded by a colonnade of wooden columns.
A series of corridors, spacious halls and small rooms is connected to the Grand Staircase. Evans, who believed that the Palace was the seat of the king of Knossos hypothesized that the residential quarters of the Royal family lay in this part of the site.

(Hall of the Double Axes)

The “Hall of the Double Axes” and the “Queen’s Megaron”
Archaeological information concerning political organization during the Minoan period is very limited. Nevertheless, the mythological tradition concerning King Minos and Evans’s notions concerning the institution of kingship have influenced interpretations or the Palace and its spaces. The “Royal Apartments” have been located in this region.
THE “HALL OF THE DOUBLE AXES”
The “Hall of the Double Axes” (Fig.1) was so named by Evans due to the double-axe signs engraved on the walls of the light-well at its rear. He also thought that it was the place or residence of the king of Knossos.
The central area has openings on three sides and is therefore called a”polythyron” (system with multiple doorways). lt has a slab floor and its walls were embellished with gypsum slabs ard frescoes, The area between the “polythyron” and the lightwell was used as a reception hall. Traces of a wooden construction were found here. Evans reconstructed a wooden throne at this spot.
According to the archaeological finds the arrangement of the apartments on the upper foor was comparable with those on the ground floor.
The “QUEEN’S MEGARON”
Near the “Hall of the Double Axes” is a smaller hall, comparably arranged and richly decorated (Fig.2). Evans thought that it must have belonged to the Queen. Fragments of frescoes with dolphins and dancing ladies were found. The room is largely restored and copies of the well Paintings have been put up on the walls (Fig.3). At the end of the room,a low partition wall with one column created a small space. It was thought that it was the “queen’s Bathroom” since pieces of a clay “bath” were found there.
A corridor joins the “Queen’s Megaron” with rooms that have been interpreted as places of preparation and washing.

“SCHOOL ROOM”, “LAPIDARY’S WORKSHOP
Here is the so-called “School Room”, an area where, according to Evans, scribes were taught to write on clay tablets. He supposes that they kneaded the clay in the built mortar next to bench (fig.1). It is more likely, however, that was a workshop for ceramic or wall-painting,
Behind the “School Room” is the “Lapidary’s Workshop”, where blocks of unworked or semi-worked lapis lacedaemoniae (spartan basalt) and stone tools were brought to light.
According to Evans, the main workshop lay on the upper floor from which vases and a large stone amphora had fallen to ground floor.

The “Magazines of the giant pithoi” AND THE “EAST BASTION”
The great pithoi (storage jars) you see before you, were found in a place named by Evans, the “Magazines of the Giant Pithoi” (Fig.1), These magazines are one of the older parts of the Palace. The pithoi are set apart by their size, number of handles and the richness of their relief decoration with ropes and discs.
On the right you see a staircase which has been reconstructed by Evans and descends to the east entrance of the Palace. The entrance is a robust construction that gives the impression of a “bastion” (Fig.2). From this point it would have been easy to reach an important building of the palatial period, the so-called “Royal Villa” which lies outside the main archaeological site.

Currents 2018/10/26

Iraklion is the largest city of Crete and one of Greece’s major urban centers. Its development begun in the wake of the 9th century AD (in antiquity, Knossos was the island’s most important centre, followed by Gortyn). In later times, Iraklion came under Arabic, Venetian and Ottoman rule; its conquerors initially gave it the name Khandaq or Handak, which was corrupted to Candia. During the 2004 0lympic Games, the city of Iraklion provided one of the venues for the football tournament. Archaeological evidence shows that Iraklion probably arose during the 9th century B.C. and was named in tribute to the Greek goddess Rhea, mother of Zeus. And like most Mediterranean cities, Iraklion has a long and turbulent history. Officially founded by the Saracens in the 9th century, the Byzantine Empire invaded in 961 only to lose control to the Crusaders who sold Crete to the Venetians in 1211 for a thousand silver coins. Iraklion finally flourished under the Venetians. Throughout the city you’ll find stunning reminders of their influences the Loggia, Venetian Walls, and Fountain of Morosini are just a few must-see examples. But Iraklion is probably best known as the gateway to the breathtaking 4,000 year-old Minoan ruins at Knossos and to the famous windmills stretched across the Lassithi Plateau.
Among the most outstanding sights of Iraklion are the fortification walls that delimit the “old city”. The first fortifications were built by the Arabs and were later reinforced by the Venetians. From the seven bastions, only the Martinengo bastion survives to this day; there visitors will find the tomb of the renowned writer N Kazantzakis, overlooking the city. From the four gates to the city, only Chanioporta with the characteristic winged Lion of Saint Marc and the New Gate (1587) at the southern side survive today. In the old (Venetian) port, next to the modern facilities, one can see the vaulted tarsanades where ships used to be built, while the westem side is dominated by the Koule fortress. In the heart of the city there are many monurnents dating to the Middle Ages, a period in which Iraklion witnessed great prosperity. From the port, ascending 25 Avgoustou (August) street, one reaches a square where the church of Agios Titos is found, while next to it lies the Venetian Loggia, a magnificent, ornate arcaded Venetian building decorated with blazons, and trophies which served as a meeting Place for the Duke and other noblemen during the Venetian period.
A typical feature of Iraklion is its Venetian and Turkish fountains, scattered all around the city. The most famous one is the Venetian style orozini-fountain, also known as the Lions, a landmark for local inhabitants and visitors alike. Other noteworthy Venetian fountains are the Bembo fountain on Kornaros Square, the Sagredo fountain built in the northwestern corner of the Loggia, and Priuli fountain located near the port. Iraklion today is living between the fast moving currents of regeneration and a deep desire to maintain links with a past. Both these strands define its character. ln the last hundred years alone, we have seen huge changes which can be quite easily followed, in buildings and streets that reflect the changing fortunes of Crete. The “old town” areas of the city, established from mediaeval times, now offer visitors some fantastic walks in the heart of the city.

Currents

Spectacular Santorini– scene of one of the world’s most violent volcanic eruptions around 1450 BC — is inarguably the most scenically dramatic of all the Greek islands. Officially the island is Thira, yet the Latin name of Santorini persists. With its pitch-black beaches, rugged landscape and stunning caldera (volcanic crater), it’s more akin to one of the Canary islands than the Cyclades, though its whitewashed churches and clifftop houses score highly in the charm stakes.
White-washed villages cling to cliff sides over the unbelievably blue Aegean Sea on this caldera, the ring formed by a collapsed volcano thousands of years ago. No wonder myths claim Santorini as the birthplace of gods. Its capital, Fira, is a welcoming village nestled atop the caldera. Accessible only by cable car, donkey or plenty of walking the town is a cobbled labyrinth of friendly cafes, shops and contemporary Greek island architecture. The town of Oia is just as beautiful, hailed for its unmatched sunsets. Explore its gardens, vineyards, churches and caves. Beaches here are dramatic, yet relaxing. Colored shores of red, white, black and gold are easily amongst the world’s most beautiful. Explore this brilliant island where nature and village life mingle in harmony,
This is the island for lovers of natural beauty, though sun seekers may not fancy its beaches. Best views are from the cliffs bordering the caldera, which was formed when the center of the island basically collapsed into itself. Geologists marvel at the cliffs’ multi-hued strata of rock, lava and pumice, so take your camera and be prepared to feel the earth move (perhaps even literally — Santorini’s most recent major earthquake was in 1956, although there was one nearby as recently as June 26, 2009.
It’s worth remembering that the bay surrounding Santorini is actually the world’s largest volcanic crater, created 3500 years ago by a massive eruption of the Thera volcano (which is still active). The bay is also believed by some to conceal the legendary lost city of Atlantis. There’s plenty here to set your imagination working. even though the modern-day city of Thira, officially Fira, was completely rebuilt after an earthquake in 1956.
Santorini is foodie paradise. Volcanic ash from eruptions throughout antiquity have fertilized the island, so that the quality of produce here is a genuine wonder of nature. More than 2000 restaurants dot the 60 mile (97 kilometer) island. Meals start with mezethes, small appetizer plates. Sample white eggplant, a sweet variety unique to the island, capers, cherry tomatoes, barley rusks, and patties and dips made of fava beans. Minced meat is a specialty here. Try moussaka, minced lamb with eggplant or pastitsio, minced beef with macaroni and bechamel sauce.
Santorini’s vineyards are superb. Most local wine comes from the Assirtiko grape, a fresh white. Nykteri is just as fresh, but more potent. For a phenomenally aged red, try the Mavrotragano. Shopping is a fun, flashy affair in Santorini, Shops are boisterous and can be packed with folk art, handcrafts, leather, fabric goods and wine. In Oia, markets are authentically Greek and cater mostly to locals. Fira has more souvenirs and is the perfect place to buy a luxury trinket or two.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION
Guests are kindly informed that the donkey path is not recommended for pedestrian walking as it is the same path used by the tourists riding donkeys on the way up and down between the pier and Fira. There are 600 steps on the donkey path and it could become tiresome and dangerous for pedestrians. The steps on the path are slippery and narrow; and they will become crowded with donkeys. Also, there is no medical assistance provided on the path itself, so if an accident did occur, there would be no one to assist. We highly advise using the cable car to go up to Fira as it is safer and more comfortable.

Dear Guest,

As you are aware last night, Riviera had to return to Piraeus for a medical emergency.
Unfortunately there were no other options available to us at the time.
Riviera departed from Piraeus at midnight, with 6 hours delayed from our original schedule and expected rough sea conditions while sailing toward Rhodes; we will not be able to make up the time to allow you some time in Rhodes. Therefore the Oceania head office has decided to cancel our call to Rhodes and proceed directly to lraklion, where we will be arriving as per schedule on October 26th.

If you are holding Oceania tickets for any tours in Rhodes, they will be automatically refunded based on your method of payment and there is no need for you to do anything further.

If you had made private arrangements in the port of Rhodes, our concierges will be happy to help you contacting your private tour operators.

The safety of our guests is always our primary concern.

We apologize for any personal disappointments and we thank you for your understanding.

wave

http://dirtydrifters.com.au/wave-rock-hyden-western-australia/

Wave Rock is a 15 metre high concave wall of granite. Streaked with black and orange algal remains, it is a spectacular site – but, despite its name, it has nothing to do with the ocean.
The shape has been carved out of ther slopes of Hyden Rock by the weathering action of water in the soil that abuts the rock
・This soil is dampered by water running off the rock but near the surface it dries quite quickly
・Deeper down the soil remains moist for much longer, allowing the “rotting” action of this moisture to eat away at the face of the rock.
・As erosion exposes more and more of the outcrop this “flares slope” (or “wave”) seems to rise up – just like a breaker on a beach.
The “wave” here at Hyden Rock is unusually high and long – if it was water it would be a mecca for surfers from all over the world! But why?
・It formed in deeply fractured rock, which allowed water to penetrate easily;
・Run-off from a wide area above was naturally channelled to this face;
・The water here was alkaline (saline) and readily attacked the granite;
・The outcrop was stable for a very long time, keeping this surface underground;
・An old river channel just north of this face added even more moisture, and
・This old river eventually eroded the surrounded quite deeply, exposing the whole of the now-massive flared slope.
Other “wave” are found around Hyden Rock, at the Humps, on other rock outcrops across Western Australia, and all other the world – but few, if any, are as spectacular as Wave Rock.

Pinnacles

Revealed by shifting sands, thousands of limestone pinnacles stand as monuments to a distant past, exposing an ethereal landscape with a mood that changes with the passage of day.A hot desolate landscape in the midday heat becomes warm and intriguing as the light from the setting sun sneaks through the vertical pillars of rock creating long contrasting shadows that play over the rippled sand. The Pinnacles Desert is a landscape that should not be viewed but experienced in all her moods.

Sculptured by the forces of nature, each pinnacle is unique, revealing the harsh environment from which it was created.

Many thousands of years ago lime sands accumulated on the shore and bed of an ocean, rich in marine life. These sands were blown inland forming high mobile dunes similar to those seen today along the Turquoise Coast. Water from winter rains percolated through a humus layer rich in decaying plant. material on the surface of these dunes, becoming acidic.

This mildly acidic water then dissolved and leached the calcium from the sand as it percolated deeper into the sandy soil leaving only the tough silica sand particles behind. Deep in the soil profile as around water levels fell in summer, calcium carbonate was deposited, cementing the silicate sand particles together to form limestone.Replenished by calcium-laden water the following winter, the process continued season after season, forming a hard layer of calcrete on the surface of the limestone deposit.

lt is here that part of the mystery of the pinnacles begins. They were hidden beneath the soil and formed over hundreds, if not thousands of years, and geologists are still divided as to how the limestone formed into columns creating the pinnacles. Some believe that the limestone between the pinnacles was leached away more rapidly in areas where plant roots increased the acidity of the soil; others believe that the pinnacles formed around the roots and trunks of buried trees. In both theories however, the pinnacles were formed beneath ground from the varied influence of acidic water as it percolated through the soil profile, first leaching then accreting calcium carbonate into interesting and diverse forms.

As the vegetation stabilizing the silicate sand was removed, probably by fire, the sand was blown away, exposing the pinnacles to the elements of the atmosphere. The pinnacles were sculptured further by wind, rain and the blistering sun into what we see today.

The Yued people have a more mythical explanation for this unique landscape that connects them to the land and carries the stories of their past.

The pinnacles experience is entirely personal and distinct. To some they are a pile of interesting rocks while others see them in a more spiritual or artistic light. Regardless, this is an experience of the Turquoise Coast that cannot be missed.
